, but you're okay, right? >> mm-hmm. >> reporter: san francisco chid psychologist dr. laura davies says don't expect the young children who went through it to talk about their fear. it may show up in symptoms like posttraumatic stress disorder like anxiety, sleeplessness. >> they may start acting out, refuse to go to bed, they might refuse to eat, pick fight with their friends. just things that aren't typical of them. >> reporter: the national center for ptsd says more than 3/4s of students who witness a school shooting may develop symptoms. one study shows 10% could still feel the effects eight months later. some children may be psychotherapy and medication. all will need loving support. >> our job as a community is to help them feel okay being vulnerable and to feel okay expressing their feelings so they don't shut down. they are going to be having nightmares. they are going to be nervous. and they are going to have a hard time trusting people. >> reporter: some connecticut parents report their children are asking when will this happen again? davies urges parents to assure the kids they'r

:17 on the dot and coming out crossing a wet golden gate bridge as you come into san francisco. let's take a look at live doppler 7-hd. best radar returns over in napa and solano, they are blue. let's focus in on the green which is normally some heavier rain or stronger radar returns. you see along mission boulevard, heading over to sunol grade and pleasanton and livermore is where we're seeing the best radar returns and also on 238 coming across hayward this morning. there is the latest update. you can see it heading over to calavares road and piedmont road. you can see those areas wet along with alum rock. steady rain through the morning hours and scattered, light showers during the afternoon hours. temperatures are very mild this morning. heading out it's coolest. concord, 52 degrees. mountain view, 56 degrees. monterey bay, low to mid-50s with light rain falling. morning, slight rain and scattered showers during the afternoon hours. frosty tonight and more so wednesday morning. it could be one of coolest mornings we've had this season and heavy rain and gusty winds for thursday will be much m

many school districts are emphasizing security procedures. amy hollyfield is live at san francisco school district headquarters to continue our coverage. >> i just spoke with the superintendent. he tells me that he has asked all his principals to take another look at emergency response plan and see if they have questions or if they need any changes. parents already saw a change first thing this morning. >> and sherman elementary school in san francisco parents watched with surprise but understanding as administrators tightened security this morning. >> they locked the doors. that is the reality. unfortunately that is the world we're living in. we have to lock down the doors. >> it's the first day back and parents say the tragedy was definitely on their minds as they dropped off their kids. >> anybody that is bringing kids to school, they are well aware of all the thoughts that are going on with the families and kids, of course, and the teachers. >> the principal at sherman told us it is an extremely difficult day for schools. she didn't want to talk to camera because she wanted to

towards san francisco wrapping up by 5:30. an accident in napa silverado trail add hardman. reports of a vehicle that hit the guardrail. chp heading out to the scene. injuries are reported. roadwork on the dumbarton bridge on the westbound side looks like that should be wrapping up within the next few minutes. cleared eastbound. no delays in the south bay. good northbound 101 through san jose, 280 guadalupe parkway no delays just yet. that's traffic. back to you. >> thank you. >>> recent rains are showing just how vulnerable our roadways can be. a new sinkhole is starting to form in the east bay. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington reports. >> reporter: what maintenance crews are worried about is this stretch of road along marsh creek flowed clayton. this is video from the scene. they have closed that part of the road. the contra costa county public works department says the road is compromised because of rain. they say a culvert failed. it's closed between deer valley and pine lane. only local traffic gets through. they don't know when the road can reopen because they need to identify

and palo alto all increased school patrols. the san francisco schools already have resource officers. extra police or not schools across the bay area are also addressing tragedy in connecticut. cbs 5 reporter joe vazquez is in san francisco with a look at how local school districts are handling it. >> reporter: schools across the bay area have spent the day reassuring parents that, yes, they are doing everything they can to keep their children as safe as possible. it may be 3,000 miles away from the worst grade school shooting in american history but still, the mood here is somber. >> i think every parent is turning around and saying, i got to hug my kids that much tighter today. i got a text from a friend who said i drove straight from my son's preschool and gave him a hug and said, son, i love you. i want to let you know that. i think that's how every parent is feeling like horrible sadness for the families that are going through this and need to reconnect. >> reporter: san francisco schoolchildren were given paperwork for parents a guide on how to talk to children about the shooting. >>
